Calling all Flat Island Samsons!

Hello! And welcome to the Samson family blog, a place where I hope we can all trade notes and gain insight into the origin of our ancestors and connect with other family members around the globe.

I would like to get input from Samson family members or even descendants of other Flat Island family lines that may interconnect with ours! What would you like to see on this blog? What format would you like it to take? You call the shots! I'll just make it flow nicely and look pretty...LOL...and hopefully I'll also have something to add to the discussion!

I've started by quoting from a reference book that gives a bit of the history of the Samson name and where it shows up in Newfoundland.

Please free to add comments, family stories, family tree info, photos, whatever you like to our little piece of the web.

Looking forward to learning from all of you!

All the best,
Nancy

I wrote previously that my grandmother was from Flat Island. I was thinking of visiting there - any recommendations regarding accomodations and places to see?

Hi Catcher!
I was up in NFLD 2 summers ago but unfortunately didn't make it out to Flat Island. I spent quite a lot of time in the New-Wes-Valley area and also near Eastport.

Check out the First Choice Inn in Sandringham. It's a lovely B&B. The owner's name is Sylvia Harvey and she is a sweetheart! Sylvia also knows folks who would be willing to take you out to Flat Island providing the weather is cooperative!

While I was in Badger's Quay I stayed at the Blue Mist Hotel. Clean, serviceable but not as nice as the B&B by a long shot. They have a restaurant on site. The owner's name is Clyde.

As for things to see, well.... it's hard to recommend things. I spent my time driving up and down the coast and exploring. There's just so much to see! The town of Salvage is quite picturesque, as is Greenspond. Norton's Cove Studio in Valleyfield (I think) is worth stopping to see.

Your best bet is to send for the free NFLD travel guide from the Tourism Board. It has all kinds of listings for events and things to see and do. It also has a really good map included!

Hope this helps!

Hi Nancy:

My sister and I were on Flat Island yesterday! My mother, Hilda Samson, was the daughter of Joseph and Melina Samson. Her siblings were Scott, Claudine, and Albert. What a beautiful wonderful spot! I'm sure my sister, Ros, will fill you in some more on the family history after we get back from Newfoundland...!

My grandmother, Martha Samson (b1888) married my grandfather Moses Ralph and moved to Toronto in the 1030's with children Wilfred, Vera and Edmund. They were married Dec. 13,1911.
Her parents were William and Eizabeth. Any more information would be helpful.
